The half-vampaneze listened without interruption. He nodded slowly. That hadn't been what he meant but he understood that the vampire meant someone's race was not a factor of judgment alone. Shendeth was the opposite of Murlough when it came to getting attention, he was always trying to hide it and stay out of things. Maybe it was impossible to hide forever but as he was now he would try as long as he could.
However the story was a different matter in his ability to understand. So the two had known each other for a long time, he didn't know his mentor's exact age but it must be hundreds of years, something difficult to truly grasp until you had lived that long. He knew Murlough very well but had only done so for about a year and a half, though his perception of that was much greater than that of a vampire. However it was the events Larten told that were the most far off from him; he didn't understand why he would take revenge for a stranger.
No actually he did, at least enough to know that asking would be a stupid and unseemly question, it was morals or compassion or fighting spirit, whatever it was that Shendeth lacked. For it wasn't in his nature to ever do the same. It sounded ridiculous to him. However he didn't comment but listened to the rest of what the vampire had to say. When he finished he was silent for a moment; he didn't know what to reply. Nothing good had ever come of his own encounters with Murlough. That was for sure.
Well actually.. "Because of Murlough I came to be here." He stared at his hands. But was it worth it? Because of Murlough he'd lost everything, even if he hadn't enjoyed life as a human at all at the time. "Why did you join the Cirque?" The vampire had said he was already there before he became one. If he wasn't a freak then Shendeth wondered what else could have led him to be there.
