Darren Shan was sitting on a bench in the town's park. He sat here bored out of his mind for the summer had started a few weeks ago. The boy was by himself due to the fact that most of his friends left on vacation with their families. He would go to Steve's, but last he had heard was his best friend had came down sick. Now he was on his own today with nothing to do. Darren could always hang out with Annie, but he really didn't feel like hanging with his little sister. Giving a sigh the brown haired boy stood up to stretch his legs out.
One thing Synara never tired of was exploring new towns, no matter how ordinary and mundane they appeared. There would only be nothing interesting to find if one didn't look. She was traveling on foot as she did often. Though right now she was merely taking a peaceful walk around on a bright summer afternoon, keeping her eyes open. It was just her feet and the sidewalk, life around them and a warm breeze blowing through. So hard to picture anything less; her dark world and the evil that could come with nightfall seemed so far away.
The seventeen-year-old loved moments like this. They were the only things that kept her sane and reminded of the light side of life. She had been walking for a while when she came to a park. Perfect. A park bench would be a nice place to rest her legs and get her bearings, but as she approached the nearest one she saw that she wouldn't be alone there; a young boy had just got up but was still standing in front of her. Well, that was fine. Synara wasn't a very outgoing person, and seeing kids that age could be bittersweet, but they didn't actively bother her.
"Hello. Do you mind if I sit here?" she asked, not in an unfriendly way, but sat down anyway before he could answer.
Darren looked up when he heard a voice of a female. Before he could say anything the woman had taken her seat on the bench next to him. Getting a better look Darren could tell she had to be somewhat in her teens. The younger boy did not know exactly what to say or do since he was a little startled. He had never seen her in this town and wondered if she had moved here or just a traveler. "Apparently I don't mind"He said bringing a smile to his face.
Stranger or not Darren wasn't going to miss the opportunity to making a new friend. Clearing his thoughts for a moment he let out a breath. "Are you new to town? Never seen you here before"He stated slightly still standing. Darren did not want to take a seat next to her if she didn't welcome it. He knew how older teens were and for the most part just left them alone. If she wanted him gone he would leave just out of respect for the new comer.
Without thinking about it, Synara moved over along the bench a little so that the boy could sit back down next to her if he wanted. She wouldn't do that for most people but what harm could this one be. He seemed nice and, she gathered from his question, lived here and knew the town and its people well. A perfect inconspicuous tour guide. The older teen gave him a thin smile in return.
"Yeah, you could say that. I'm a traveler." Her voice was slightly low for her gender, and she spoke with a slight English accent that probably made her seem all the more interesting to her new acquaintance when combined with her dramatic make-up and the nature of her visit. "You seem like you know your way around. Tell me, while I'm here is there anyplace I should go? Anything interesting ever happen in this town?"
She needed something to do after all. How long she stayed here was indefinite; she was not going anywhere, so it all depended on whether or not this place caught her interest. If it did, she would hang around for a bit, and if it didn't she would move on; simple as that. And also, every proper local kid should know a few creepy stories. That was what she was really interested in; ghost stories, haunted houses, reports of unusual happenings. But anything he felt like telling her would be fine.
Darren watched as the girl moved over some for him to sit back down. Sitting back down he couldn't help but smile. By listening to her voice it got the young boy's interest. Her accent seemed strange to him and even if she hadn't told him she was a traveler... he could tell by her voice she was. "It is a small town. There really isn't much interesting here if you were looking for a special place"He said looking at the ground. Everything he said was true his town really didn't have much to show. Of course they had movies and parks plus some other things, but nothing extraordinary.
The boy hopes to travel when he gets older. In a way he doesn't want to be stuck in his hometown without knowing everything that is truly out in the world. In a way it would be nice to be a traveler like the older teen, but he also knew he would miss his family and friends.
The boy's response was uninteresting, but she had to admit not unexpected. It did look like your everyday ordinary town on the surface. She was looking for a special place, so in that way it was disappointing. But still, the world was vast, and she was capable of finding such ordinary places where others couldn't on her own. Synara had nowhere to go, so there was no reason to stop talking to the kid. She crossed her legs in her seat, looking around the park once before turning back to reply.
Hearing the female's name seemed strange to the boy's ears. Of course she had already told him she was a traveler, but still her name was odd compared to the others in his town. "My name is Darren Shan. Pleasure to meet you Synara"He said still with his smile on his face. All good so far since she hadn't left or was rude to him. It wondered the boy why the teen wanted to even talk to him. Most teens around her age he knew in town really didn't like to hang out with kids his age. Looking around the park he saw a few people walking some alone and some with family or friends. It happened to be a nice day for the Summer. Not to overbearing heat from the sun made the boy's day.
Darren Shan, it was an ordinary name, but it fit and flowed nicely. Synara cracked a small smile in return as she tried to think of something else to say. She wanted to continue the conversation because well, why not. In spite of not being the social type, it gave her some sort of peace to see and meet new people, and she didn't discriminate on who those people might be. Darren was an absolutely wonderful companion compared to some she had met in her travels.
"Pleasure to meet you too." She didn't want to say anything that might be unsettling coming from a stranger, but if what he said about the level of the town's boringness was true, then she had all day to sit here and nothing better to do. However, she didn't know if Darren did. If he left she would not be offended or put out in the slightest; she knew he probably wanted to go hang out with someone his own age. "So, what are you up to today, Darren? It's a nice day to be outside." He could go ahead and take his leave if he wanted, or not.
"I'm not doing anything today. I am just chilling out here. I am on my own today because my best friend is sick. In the end I decided to just chill here and watch everyone"Darren responded looking around and decided to watch a couple play with their dog. Least he was not by himself, and he might as well say that he had met a new friend. Darren did not know how long she was going to be staying, but he just decided to enjoy her company now while it lasted before she decided to leave. He didn't know exactly how long Steve was going to be sick so he did not know how long it was going to be that he was by himself.
Synara listened and nodded. They were in the same boat then, except for the best friend part. The seventeen-year-old was alone because she was always alone. She had had a few acquaintances back home of course, but didn't keep in contact. The way things were, she was free and focused, but she sometimes wondered what it would be like to have a companion. She was here because the best friend she ever had was gone. "Me too. I'm in no rush to go anywhere. You're lucky to have a best friend. Traveling is just wonderful, getting to see everything. The only downside is that it can be lonely." Synara gave a thin smile and looked out over the park and all the people, each with a different life and going somewhere different as they passed by.
